Supporting your bush after fire Notes

Part 2

What to look out for

What should recover, in what order, and how long will it take?

Most of what was on your block before the fire is still there, even if you can’t see it yet. Plants resprout from buds under the bark or below ground, seed stored in the soil germinates in the ash, and animals move back in as shelter and food return.

This part explains the stages recovery moves through, the strategies plants use to come back, and which ones are likely to struggle. This will help you understand what should reappear, and roughly when. It will also help you identify sensitive species that may be at risk of dropping out.

What should come back on your block

On its Part 2 tab, the Wimmera Bushfire Ecology Lookup Tool shows the growth stage of each part of your block (section 2.1) and the native plants there that are most sensitive to fire coming too often (section 2.2). Section 2.3 brings Parts 1 and 2 together, with the tool’s printable report.
